Welcome to the Candlewood Camera Club
We’d like to give you more information about the club and its meetings so that you have a good understanding about what to expect when you join the club.
Our meetings are generally held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. With our season beginning at the end of August and continuing through the end of June. Our meetings usually begin at 7:30 pm (our holiday and end-of-year banquets begin at 6:30 pm), however most members arrive beginning at 7:00 pm to enter their prints into competition and to socialize with other members before the meetings begin. The 2nd Tuesday of the month is a competition meeting where members’ prints and digital images are entered into competition and are evaluated by independent judges. This is described in detail, below. The 4th Tuesday of the month is a program meeting. Program meetings vary and can include speakers who come in to teach the members something new, could be a shooting night where members bring in their cameras to shoot models, still life or other subjects, or could be a holiday party or End-of-Year banquet.

Membership & Dues
A family membership includes one or two adults and their minor children or grandchildren (under age eighteen). A minor child (under age 16) must be accompanied to any club activity by a parent or designated guardian over the age of eighteen. Drop-offs are not permitted.
Dues are $50 per person, payable in advance for the year. The activity year begins with the initial meeting in the fall. Dues shall be reduced to one-half this amount for individuals joining the club after the January competition. Two individuals living in the same household pay a combined total of $75 per year. A family membership is $75 per year. Dues for full-time students (high school and college) is $10 until graduation.
Part of the fun of belonging to the Candlewood Camera Club is the competition meetings. While you are free to sit back and enjoy the terrific photography, club members who are current on their dues are also eligible to take part. Why join in on the competition? We believe that the competitions helps us all to become better photographers.
Assigned subjects are selected for each of the monthly competitions. These assigned subjects encourage each of us to break out of any ruts and get us out shooting subjects that we might not normally shoot. They can challenge both our photographic “eye” and the technical skills needed to achieve our vision. By submitting our photography to critique by impartial judges, it allows us to also take an objective look at our work along with the judges. We learn more about what makes a good photograph which helps us each time we raise a camera to our eye in the future. And beyond all of these reasons, many of us compete simply because we enjoy sharing our photography and enjoying the works of other photographers. And whether it is our photograph or another’s being judged, we all learn from the experience.
Competition meetings occur on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. At these meetings, club members who are current on their membership dues may submit prints and digital images into competition. The competitions are conducted anonymously, with only the 1st and 2nd place winners announced in each category. Independent judges (i.e., from outside of the club membership) score the prints and provide comments explaining what they like about the images and their suggestions on how the image could potentially be improved.
All of the details on the competitions may be found in the club’s bylaws, but here is a summary. Club members are divided into two categories – Class A and Class B. Class A members are advanced photographers and longer term members of the club. Class B members are beginner to intermediate photographers and newer members of the club. A new member will normally be assigned to Class B, although please see the Club President if you feel that you should move directly into Class A based on your experience and skill level. The club offers Print and Digital Image competitions. Details regarding entering prints and digital images into competition are provided below. You may enter only one image into each category of competition, except when you miss a competition and wish to enter a makeup the following month. But be sure to see the information below, and in the bylaws, to understand the rules regarding when makeups are allowed.
Please be aware that we welcome you as a guest at any of our meetings, but only club members who are current on their club dues may participate in the competitions.
Club members who have paid their dues may enter up to a total of five prints into competition every month – one in each of the following categories:
1. Assigned Subject Color or BW Print – The assigned subject is determined in advance and can be found in the Events section of this web site by clicking on the meeting date.
2. Open Color Print – The subject is “open,” meaning that the member may submit a photo of any subject that they wish.
3. Open Black & White Print
Prints may be any size, up to a maximum limit of 16 x 20 inches. Prints must be presented on mount boards and may be matted at the discretion of the member. Note that the size limit includes any mounting boards or mattes. It is common for members to present photos that are approximately 11 x 17 inches, which are then matted up to 16 x 20. Also common are 16 x 20 inch photos that are mounted on 16 x 20 foam core or other mounting board. Smaller sizes, such as 8 x 10 prints are also entered into competition, but keep in mind that the impact on the judges is generally better with a larger sized print. Before 7:20 pm on the night of competition, the prints must be registered into competition. A print entry form must be printed, filled out and taped to the back of the photo on the top, left corner. This may be done ahead of time, before arriving at the club meeting. Once arriving at the meeting, locate the table that holds the prints for the categories that you plan to enter. At each print entry location, there is a sign-in form where you will enter your name and the title of your image. There also may be a check box on the sign-in form where you can indicate if you wish the judges to provide comments on your photo during competition. The judges provide helpful critiques, including what they like about the photo as well as suggestions on how the photo could potentially be improved. Fill in all of the requested information on the sign-in form. Make note of the entry number you have been assigned (taken from the sign-in form) and write that number in the appropriate place on the print entry form that was attached to the back of your photo. Place your print face down on top of the pile of prints for your category. You have now entered your print into competition and may repeat these steps for each image you would like to enter!
During competition, each print is displayed for the judges, one at a time. The names of the photographers are not announced, so that the judging may be impartial. Each of the three judges then provides a score that generally ranges from 6 through 10 with 10 being the best possible score. The sum total of the three judges’ scores is then entered as the score for the image. The judges then may make comments on the photo. After all of the images in a category have been scored, the first and second place prints for the competition are displayed and the members’ names for those images are announced. The winning member may be asked to comment briefly on the photo.
If you are going to miss a meeting, you may give your prints to someone else who may enter them into competition on your behalf. Otherwise, you may enter them as makeups the in one of the following two months. To enter images as makeups, you would enter two images into each category (except Assigned Subject as no makeups are allowed in this category). One of the two images in each category must be marked on the sign-in sheet as a “makeup.” The image marked as “makeup” is not eligible to be a monthly 1st or 2nd place winner, but the points obtained from the judging do count towards the end-of-year awards. The competition scores will be posted on the web site with the scores updated after each competition. Members will be able to see how their scores compare to the other club members and where they stand in the overall yearly point totals.
Digital Images Competition
Club members who have paid their dues may enter up to five digital images into competition every month – one in each of the following categories:
1. Assigned Subject Digital Image Color or Black & White – The assigned subject is determined in advance and can be found in the Events section of this web site by clicking on the meeting date.
2. Open Color Digital Image – The subject is “open,” meaning that the member may submit a photo of any subject that they wish.
3. Open Black & White Digital Image
Digital images must be uploaded before the deadline of 9:00 am on the Monday before the Tuesday night competition. Note that before you email the images, you should ensure the image:
– Has a filename that meets the designated naming convention
– Is saved in the sRGB color space
– Has a pixel dimension no greater than 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels tall.
– Is saved using a quality setting to keep the file size to a reasonable level (e.g., 600-800 KB)

There is no need to register your images once you arrive at the club meeting since you have already emailed your images ahead of time. It is also not required for you to be present at the meeting to enter digital images and have your images scored.
During competition, the scoring and judges comments are all handled in the same way as the print competition. As with the print competitions, if you miss a competition, you may enter a “makeup” in one of the following two months. To enter images as makeups, you would enter two images into each category (except Assigned Subject as no makeups are allowed in this category). One of the two images in each category must be marked in the filename as a “make-up.” The image marked as “makeup” is not eligible to be a monthly 1st or 2nd place winner, but the points obtained from the judging do count towards the end-of-year awards. The competition scores will be posted on the web site with the scores updated after each competition. Members will be able to see how their scores compare to the other club members and where they stand in the overall yearly point totals.
